Review of Social Patterns in Australian Literature by T. Inglis Moore
Abstract
That Professor Inglis Moore is an amateur is clear from his preface and the chapter called 'The Social Element in Literature'. The opening sentence of the preface states the author's main aim: 'This study examines Australian literature, not as literature, but as Australian— as the expression of significant patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour distinguishing the Australian society.' But how do you study patterns in literature without studying literature as literature?
