Review of Australian Culture Elites by John Docker and The Australian Experience edited by W.S. Ransom

Abstract

The simultaneous appearance of these two books indicates the growing interest in Australian literary-cultural studies. Neither, unfortunately, has any strong organizing framework of informing theory of society: one is a somewhat random collection of essays on the Australian novel arranged in chronological order; the other, by John Docker, claims to be a comparative study of the intellectual traditions of Melbourne and Sydney, but is actually a loose assortment of essays placed under two heads and strung together by brief bridging passages.
