John Barnes
John Barnes, now Emeritus Professor of English at La Trobe University, previously taught at Melbourne University and the University of W. A. (where Randolph Stow was a colleague for a year). His publications include critical studies of Australian literature and the Penguin Henry Lawson: Short Stories (which has been in print since 1986). He has written three biographies: The Order of Things: A Life of Joseph Furphy (1990), Socialist Champion: Portrait of the Gentleman as Crusader (2006), and La Trobe: Traveller, Writer, Governor, published this year; and is currently at work on a volume of literary reminiscences, Partial Portraits.
