Abstract
Telling Tales is a collection of nearly ninety short essays, chock full of interesting nuggets and quirky asides, the writing often brisk and entertaining. But it can also be moving, like this, from Mark McKenna's description of Manning Clark, on the investment of the writer in their text: 'Whoso attacks my [work],' he maintained, 'is undermining my deepest self'—'He saw no separation between his own flesh and blood and the words he inscribed on the page: "they are me"' ('Six pack' 245). A handy warning for a reviewer.
