The Battlers: Kylie Tennant and the Australian Tradition
Abstract
The Battlers, generally regarded as Kylie Tennant's most successful and probably most characteristic novel, cannot be properly understood without reference to what may conveniently, if somewhat loosely, be called the Australian or Lawson-Furphy tradition. This embodies a number of moral, social and political values which are popularly believed to be typical of the country and to which many Australians have gone for a sense of national identity.
