Review of Stella Miles Franklin: A Biography, by Jill Roe
Abstract
In recent decades, the name 'Miles Franklin' has been best known for the Miles Franklin Literary Award, an antipodean Booker or Pulitzer. It is given annually to the author of the previous year's novel of the highest literary merit, a work which must also 'present Australian life in any of its phases'. Now, though, with Roe's very substantial work before us—a 'full-dress biography' Laurie Hergenhan calls it in the Australian Book Review (March 2009) —we must all know that there are a great many other claims on our attention to the name 'Miles Franklin' as well.
