Abstract

There is a growing need both here and overseas for scholarly introductory studies-of Australian authors designed for the general reader and tertiary student. The series called 'Australian Writers and their Work', edited byGeoffrey Dutton and published by theLansdowne Press up to 1965 and edited by Grahame Johnston and published by Oxford University Press since 1967, is similar in scope and length to the British Council's highly successful series, 'Writers and their Work'. The aim of each is to provide concise, informative introductions. The volumes include brief details of the writer's life, a survey of his main writings, a critical assessment of his work, and an up-to-date bibliography.
