Review of Imagined Lives: A Study of David Malouf, Sheer Edge: Aspects of Identity in David Malouf's Writing, David Malouf, and Randolph Stow
Abstract
After the opening performance of Mer de Glace at the Sydney Opera House, the appearance of David Malouf and Richard Meale on stage was greeted by what sounded like a roar of affection. It may have been my imagination, but the greater part of the affection seemed to be directed at Malouf, and to go well beyond the role he had played as the opera's librettist. Emotions of this kind appear not to have moved the critics, however, who in the days to follow greeted the opera with considerable coolness, and varying degrees of scepticism.
