Places My Brilliant Career in the wider context of late nineteenth century Australian writing and literary cultures, examining its position in the Australian literary canon with reference to the novel's similarities with another canonical text that similarly blurs the line between fiction and autobiography, Joseph Furphy's Such is Life (1903).
