Oodgeroo as Friend and Artist
Abstract
I first came across Oodgeroo's writing in 1965. I was living in Nigeria at the time, where Australia hardly entered one's consciousness. The slim volume of poems We Are Going shocked me into an awareness of the plight of the Australian Aborigines. Kath Walker, as she was then called, was the first Aborigine I had ever heard of, and by some curious set of circumstances she also became the first Aborigine I was to meet in person a few years later.
