Life-Lines in Stormy Seas: Some Recent Collections of Women’s Diaries and Letters
Abstract
In the history of women's writing in Australia, 1992 may well earn the title of the year of the letters, given the coincidental publication of several important collections of correspondence and journal writing. These include Life Lines: Australian Women's Letters and Diaries 1788 to 1840, edited by Patricia Clarke and Dale Spender; As Good as a Yarn With You: Letters between Miles Franklin, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Jean Devanny, Marjorie Barnard, Flora Eldershaw and Eleanor Dark, edited by Carole Ferrier; and two volumes of Christina Stead's correspondence from 1928-1983, A Web of Friendship and Talking into the Typewriter, edited by Ron Geering.
